Astrocytoma is a medical condition caused by astrocytes, which are star-shaped brain cells. The disease has been classified into four groups based on the cell's reproduction rate and ability to spread in nearby tissues. Grades I and II astrocytomas are non-cancerous and are referred to as low grade. Grades III and IV, on the other hand, are cancerous and have the capacity to cause death. Lower grade astrocytoma can progress to high grade astrocytoma over time. Anaplastic astrocytomas are another name for grade III astrocytomas. Anaplastic Astrocytoma is a rare medical condition that is classified into two types: IDH-mutant and IDH-wildtype. IDH1 is a gene that encodes isocitrate dehydrogenase, a metabolic enzyme.

There are currently three main treatment options for anaplastic astrocytoma: surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. In the majority of cases, surgery is the first line of treatment. Only if the entire tumour cannot be safely excised or removed are patients advised to seek alternative treatment. This treatment pattern, in which drugs are used as a second or third line of treatment, has hampered the sales of pharmaceutical drugs such as Temodar, limiting the growth of the anaplastic astrocytoma treatment market.
